Drawing is a process that is commonly done in the metalworking industry. It is valued for its ability to increase the length of a piece of metal by pulling it to the desired length. The term ‘drawing’ comes from the way the metal is extended, as the machine draws the piece of metal out by stretching it.
Diamond Suspension products are commonly used in metal drawing, due to its ability to maintain quality results throughout the drawing procedure. Quality diamond suspension products are also generally unaffected by the high temperatures needed in the drawing process.
Types of metal drawing and how it’s done
Metal drawing is a multipurpose function in metalworking. It is used for several different purposes, all of them with their unique processes and functions.
Let’s take a look at 4 methods of drawing and how each process is executed:
Bar drawing. Bar drawing focuses on bar-shaped metal pieces which is fed through a piece of machinery called a die, which then stretches the metal. The die also ensures that the metal reaches its ideal shape, as only once it does will it pass through the die to the other end.
Sheet metal drawing. Producing accurate dimensions of sheet metal is the goal with this process, which is achieved with an accurate amount of pressure. The pressure used has to be measured precisely so that the piece of metal will come out exactly as it needs to be, at the right amount of thinness and length.
Deep drawing. Deep drawing is generally a more complex procedure than the former two as its purpose it to stretch out a piece of metal longer than its diameter.
Cold drawing. Cold drawing is done at room temperature, which can produce more accurate results without the risk of manipulating the metals chemical properties.
